Mitraniketan

Mitraniketan, founded in 1956 by Padma Shri K. Viswanathan, is a pioneering rural development institution inspired by the educational philosophies of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. Rooted in Gandhian principles, it promotes community-centered education, self-sufficiency, sustainable agriculture, traditional crafts, and appropriate rural technologies. Over the past seven decades, Mitraniketan has evolved into a comprehensive rural institute supporting education, training, livelihood generation, and community empowerment, benefiting over 5,000 people annually. With a strong focus on tribal and rural education, it integrates formal and non-formal learning to enable holistic development of individuals, families, and communities. In recognition of its impactful work, Mitraniketan was granted special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council in June 2023.
